Press release – MIS 2024 results

- Consolidation, sustainability and investment in people: a new phase of growth for MIS – Magli Intermodal Service, which reports revenue of €61 million for 2024.
- Strong momentum from industrial waste transport linked to major construction projects and, more broadly, from the contribution transport can make to an economic system in which waste becomes a resource through an increasingly integrated cycle.
- Volumes carried along international intermodal and road corridors account for more than 77% of the total tonnes transported. Excluding industrial waste volumes, the trend is slightly down, but performance is better than the decline recorded in Italian exports in the relevant steel and metal alloy sector.
Rezzato (BS), 10 April 2025
MIS, Magli Intermodal Service, reports revenue of €61 million for 2024, in line with the 2023 result (€61.5 million) and up from €49.3 million in 2022. Following an intensive period of development, the company is now entering a further phase of consolidation, with the aim of improving efficiency and strengthening profitability and its capital base, supported by a competitive position in the key sectors of steel and industrial waste recovery.
Intermodal and road transport
In 2024, intermodal traffic was concentrated mainly on Germany (47% of volumes), with an increase expected in 2025, as in Sweden (2% in 2024), which is also set for strong expansion in 2025. By contrast, traffic with the Netherlands (41% of total intermodal volumes) is expected to decrease in the following year. In road transport, Italy remains a stable market (27% of the total), with growth prospects particularly in trade with Switzerland (currently 7% of volumes) and Austria (20%), while Germany (42%) shows signs of stability or a slight contraction, clearly reflecting the decline in GDP and the slowdown affecting automotive supply chains. In total, MIS transported 77.5% of its volumes, measured in tonnes, to and from other countries in 2024, confirming its role as an intermodal and road logistics operator supporting the competitiveness of Italian industrial districts connected with steel and the trading of raw materials, ferrous alloys and other commodities.
In volume terms, excluding the industrial waste business, total tonnes transported fell slightly (2%), reaching 1,220,000 tonnes in 2024 compared with 1,248,000 tonnes in 2023. This result must be considered in the broader context of the company’s main reference sector: steel production and the trading of ferrous raw materials and other commodities. That sector recorded a 10% decline in exports, partly due to falling prices that preceded the impact of international tariffs at the centre of the geopolitical upheaval of recent days. The districts of Brescia, Cremona, Udine and Mantua remain the main export areas, although with reductions compared with 2023. Against this background, MIS is consolidating its presence along the principal international road and intermodal corridors, supporting customers with transport and advanced logistics, with the aim of making the most of the opportunities offered by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and major infrastructure projects.
Distinctive positioning and new developments
MIS stands out for its specialisation in the transport of steel industry materials — from pig iron to steel in various forms, including slabs, billets, beams and pipes — and of special industrial waste, both hazardous and non-hazardous. The company also works in synergy with its investee companies to provide terminal services, road and intermodal transport, quayside handling and rail traction across several national hubs (Cremona, Brescia, Venice, Trieste and Jesi), with the aim of continually identifying new opportunities, both in its ordinary activities and beyond.
In 2024, the industrial waste transport sector developed significantly in both road and intermodal transport, in connection with major construction sites and specialised logistics for large incineration plants and recycling collection centres. MIS’s revenue in this segment more than quadrupled in 2024, following substantial investment in vehicles and transport capacity over the previous two years. Through its gradual progression from category 5c to 5b and then 5a in Italy’s National Register of Environmental Managers, MIS can now handle unlimited quantities of hazardous industrial waste, moving more than 6,500 containers per year safely. ISO 14001 certification has also enabled a 40% reduction in the financial guarantee required by the Ministry of the Environment. This new operating capacity makes it possible to take on increasingly ambitious projects while ensuring high standards of quality and safety. In line with its mission, MIS contributes to a sector increasingly guided by the principles of the circular economy. Logistics is a decisive factor in an economic system in which waste becomes a resource through an integrated waste cycle: the set of processes that identify waste, direct it towards appropriate treatment and recovery, and then transform it, through innovative technologies that increase its potential for reuse, either into secondary raw materials to be returned to the economy or into renewable energy, whether thermal or electrical, restarting the production cycle for new materials and products.
Innovation and sustainability
MIS’s approach is based on advanced technologies and partnerships with leading suppliers of IT services (CIRCLE group) and on-board equipment for heavy goods vehicles. The vehicles are increasingly equipped with innovative safety and assistance systems such as Predictive Powertrain Control from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The company’s commitment to sustainability is also demonstrated by a recent certificate resulting from its collaboration with Michelin and Rigomma, through which innovative tyre regrooving and retreading solutions have been introduced.
This commitment, certified by DEKRA Italia, has delivered savings of 82.2 tonnes of CO₂ and 26.4 tonnes of raw materials. It is summarised as a saving of 0.33 tonnes of CO₂ for each vehicle in the MIS fleet, which comprises 140 heavy goods vehicles and 190 semi-trailers, supported by a 24-hour maintenance service provided by MIS Service, the internal team responsible for the fleet’s technical management.
MIS is also involved in international research and development programmes, including the AutoMoTIF project (https://automotif-project.eu/), which will bring more than 30 managers to Brescia and Cremona on 6 and 7 May for a project plenary meeting and a technical visit to the intermodal terminals in Cremona and Montirone (BS).
People: training and inclusion
In 2024, MIS reached 172 employees (+7.5% compared with 2023), including 122 drivers. Recruitment and training for drivers remain under considerable pressure because of a shortage of specialised personnel and high staff turnover. The overall average age is 41, with an average of 35 among office staff. Significant investment was made in training, with more than 1,330 hours of mandatory courses (safety, machinery operation and other subjects) and around 1,175 hours of non-mandatory courses (languages, leadership and management training).
The number of women working in the offices has tripled over the past four years, rising from 5 to 17, or 56% of a total of 30 office employees. The company offers an integrated employee welfare system, including meal vouchers and a digital platform for welfare credits, and supports families at important times such as maternity.
“After five years of strong expansion, our priority is to consolidate our structure, focus on our strengths and continue raising our standards of sustainability and innovation,” says Paolo Magli, President of MIS. “In such a complex and dynamic context, we want to build solid partnerships, strengthen profitability and promote an inclusive workplace focused on personal growth.”
